Fandom: This show…makes all the characters so human and relatable. I just can’t. Ahh my babies are sad sometimes and feel alone/sad/confused. They obviously didn’t mean something they said and or how loud they said it and everyone is over it now.

Fandom: HOW IS THIS A KIDS SHOW MAKO IS TOTALLY GOING INTO AN ABUSIVE SPIRAL OMG SO MEAN TO HIS BROTHER AND ASAMI AND KORRA AND UGH TOTALLY DIDN’T SAVE THEIR LIVES AND OR TAKE CARE OF THEM AT SOME POINT WHAT THAT DIDNT HAPPEN! CONTROL YOUR TONE I CANT BELIEVE THIS WORST PERSON EVER DOWN TO HIS SOUL UGH.

:The list could go on…mako has made two or three mistakes in (for all we know his entire life) the series and the fandom is as unforgiving and unjust as Ozai when it comes to punishing him 20fold for minor mistakes. I really don’t even >.>

korralation’s view: I agree with a lot of this, except for the fact that he was a douchebag for some of it. He handled it badly, probably due to a lack of experience and stress, but he still made some stupid mistakes. I’m a big Mako fan, but he did indeed screw up royally. But yes. A lot of this.Okay, I want to focus on the part in bold.
First off, I get mad at the fact that this scene can be so easily paralleled to one of the best scenes from the original series. Makorra hasn’t earned that right….
But then we come to the important part.
I completely disapproved of Katara’s vicious actions, and I was glad that she held back—it was all projected in a negative light, too, with a deliberate focus on how self-destructive it would be to kill him.
Aang’s explosion in the desert was also a major negative—the scene was meant to be terrifying, and he was completely unnerved by this. So those two were negatives, which is what we would have WANTED the Mako scene to be seen as…but it wasn’t.
Which brings us back to the Sokka scene.
Which took place because Azula was MOCKING SOKKA about how Suki was her “favorite prisoner” and how she had given up on him coming to rescue her. She was the princess of the Fire Nation, and she was outright gloating about how she had captured Sokka’s girlfriend and broken her. The Equalist was a simple rank-and-file mook. Heck, the protesting guy in the park was more worthy of that kind of behavior because of his whole “But if he’s a bender, my guess is he’s getting what’s coming to him!” line.
You don’t threaten to torture mooks. Big Bads and Dragons, yeah, sure, go ahead. Especially when they’re mocking you. But the common grunts who are on the job to earn a decent paycheck? That’s wrong. That’s VERY wrong.
So, yeah, don’t try comparing that scene to the ones from the original series. It doesn’t hold up.
Just wanted to add something to the Sokka/Azula scene.
Azula had a dagger. She totally would have disemboweled Sokka if Toph hadn’t caught her.
