Well, she was born an Air Acolyte. This headcanon comes from the note that the woman who helps her give birth looks similar to her, and could be her mother; so, Pema may be an Air Acolyte from birth. Born and raised with the Nomads. Always cheerful, optimistic, and either a head-turner or a wallflower. She was quiet and shy, and liked things calm—reading was her major passion. She loved reading about Aang’s adventures, and even helped to compile several anthologies out of his journals. She found out that she was interested in Tenzin when interviewing him one time; she liked his serious nature. Studying him and noting things about him actually made her realize that he wasn’t happiest around Lin…but that’s all after she became a full-fledged Acolyte, so, yeah, I’ll leave it there. ;)

None of that is set in stone, of course.
